Michael Schmitt is a professor and research scientist at Ernst-Moritz Arndt-Universität, Greifswald, Germany. He served as an ISZS EC member (2004–2008). He received his Diploma in Biology in 1976 and Doctorate in 1982 at Freie Universität, Berlin, Germany. From 1983–1992, he worked as an assistant at University Freiburg, Breisgau, Germany. From 1992–2009, he was a curator of Coleoptera and Head of Department of Arthropods at Zoologisches Forschungs Museum Alexander Koenig, Bonn, Germany. Currently he is a professor and research scientist for Allgemeine and Systematische Zoologie (General and Systematic Zoology) at Ernst-Moritz Arndt-Universität, Greifswald, Germany. His research interests include phylogenetics.
