In January 2004, under the impetus of JohnBuckeridge, Francis Dov Por and ZhibinZhang, an initiative to establish anInternational Society of Zoological Sciences(ISZS) was endorsed at the GeneralAssembly of the International Union ofBiological Sciences (IUBS). Later, inAugust 2004, the XIX InternationalCongress of Zoology (ICZ) was held inBeijing and the ISZS was established. 

The constituent bodies of the Society are:the General Assembly (GA), the ExecutiveCommittee, and the Secretariat. At the XIXICZ, also the first ISZS GA, it was decidedthat the permanent Secretariat would belocated in Beijing.
