International Society of Zoological Sciences Leads Delegation to Visit FAO Headquarters for One Health Exchange

On July 14-15, 2026, the FAO-ISZS-Hainan University One Health Cooperation and Exchange Seminar was held at the FAO Headquarters in Rome, Italy. Professor ZHANG Zhibin, Dean of Hainan International One Health Institute (HIOHI), Vice President and Executive Director of the International Society of Zoological Sciences (ISZS), from Hainan University; Professor Santiago Merino, President of ISZS, from the National Museum of Natural Sciences of Spain; Professor Nils Stenseth, Former President of ISZS, from the University of Oslo, Norway; Professor Yvon Le Maho, ISZS Executive Committee Member, from the Hubert Curien Multidisciplinary Institute, CNRS, France; and Dr. LIU Ming, Deputy Secretary-General of ISZS, participated in the seminar. FAO representatives included Mr. Thanawat Tiensin, Assistant Director-General, Chief Veterinarian, Director, Animal Production and Health Division; Ms. SONG Junxia, FAO Deputy Chief Veterinarian and Chief of One Health and Disease Control, Animal Production and Health Division; and Officers from FAO Animal Production and Health Division, Fairouz Larfaoui, YIN Hui, Francesca Latronico, and Nick Lyons.

During the seminar, a delegation led by Ms. LUO Hui, Executive Secretary of CAST, visited FAO and attended the exchange seminar. FAO Director-General QU Dongyu met with Ms. LUO Hui and the delegation. The meeting was also attended by Mr. ZHANG Lubiao, Ambassador of the Chinese Mission to FAO; Ms. HE Wei, Deputy Director-General, Department of International Affairs, CAST; Mr. HUANG Xiaochun, Deputy Director, the China Centre for International Science and Technology Exchange; Mr. ZHANG Benfang, Director of the Overseas Liaison Division, Department of International Affairs, CAST; Mr. XU Guanqun, Director of the Science and Technology Exchange Division, China Centre for International Science and Technology Exchange; Professor ZHANG Zhibin and Dr. LIU Ming from ISZS. Both sides engaged in in-depth discussions on project cooperation, talent cultivation, and personnel exchanges.

Following the meeting, the CAST delegation, together with ISZS and Hainan University attendees, visited the FAO Museum to learn about the agricultural development history and production characteristics of various countries. After the museum visit, the delegation visited the FAO global animal disease database. The database collects animal disease data from around the world and can analyze different outbreaks in real time based on the collected data, providing early warning and guidance for global animal disease prevention and control.

During the seminar, FAO Assistant Director-General Thanawat Tiensin held discussions and exchanges with the CAST, ISZS, and Hainan University delegation. He expressed his full commitment to advancing the cooperation and exchanges between FAO, ISZS, and Hainan University in the field of One Health in agrifood systems.

On July 15, the ISZS and Hainan University delegation held in-depth and detailed discussions with Ms. SONG Junxia, Chief of One Health and Disease Control; and officers Fairouz Larfaoui, YIN Hui, Francesca Latronico, and Nick Lyons from the Animal Production and Health Division, on future tripartite cooperation plans. Both sides agreed that future cooperation will closely focus on global food supply, livestock product, and aquatic product security and production, integrating big data analysis, conference exchanges, thematic training, and public awareness campaigns to advance international cooperation and exchanges in monitoring, early warning, and control in areas related to plant health, animal health, and environmental health.

During the seminar, the ISZS and Hainan University delegation also attended the FAO global animal disease database's weekly outbreak reporting meeting. The regular meeting briefed participants on the latest global developments of Ebola, highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1, and African swine fever. Subsequently, participants engaged in in-depth discussions and reached consensus on cooperation in big data analysis.
